The Men of the Choir
"There is little that is as rewarding as performing great music to appreciative congregations in some of the best venues in the world, as well as some close to home. The choir gives you a chance not only to experience a level of musical experience that is rarely available to non-professionals, but also, and most importantly, it is great fun."
Nick Cahm - Tenor
The altos, tenors and basses form the backbone of choral music-making at Emmanuel, and almost always perform with the Boys' or Girls' choirs (and sometimes both!). Members of the back rows of the choir are usually older trebles whose voices have broken, or adults who have a passion for choral singing.
The men of the choir sing Evensong with the boys every Sunday evening during term time, and also sing for Morning Eucharist on the first, third and fifth Sundays of the month. In addition, they accompany the upper voice choirs on all tours, from Cathedrals in the United Kingdom to Concert Halls around the world. In recent years, the choir have sung in Notre Dame Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral, York Minster and Symphony Hall. Recent men of the choir have gone on to sing with Scottish Opera and Winchester Cathedral Choir.
Emmanuel Choir is free to join, and men are paid for singing at weddings and other extra services. Some experience and a relatively high standard are required to sing with the back rows of the choir, and those interested would be asked to attend an audition with the Director of Music.
